Writing Residencies in 2026: Where to Apply and When

Anderson Center’s Early Career Artist Residency is an ideal fit for early-career artists in need of focused time and dedicated space in an inspiring residency work environment that empowers them take risks, embrace challenges, and utilize unconventional approaches to problem-solving.

The Playa Flamingo Writing Residency, sponsored by Atmosphere Press, offers a five-day residency from May to August to a poet, fiction writer, nonfiction writer, or translator at the Punta Plata condominium in Playa Flamingo, a white sand beach located in Guanacaste, Costa Rica.

The Anderson Residency Program is open to early career, mid-career, and established visual artists, writers, composers, choreographers, multidisciplinary artists, musicians, performance artists, scholars, and translators from across the globe. The program is interdisciplinary and the organization welcomes applications from a wide range of creative and intellectual genres.

The Buinho Creative Residency offers a unique opportunity for artists, writers, and innovators to work on their projects in the serene rural setting of Messejana, Portugal. The residency provides access to various creative facilities, fostering an environment of collaboration and exploration.

The Narrows Artist residency gives creative individuals time and space away from their usual regular routine of life for reflection, research or production.

The Tyrone Guthrie Residency, located at the Tyrone Guthrie Centre, offers residential opportunities and workspaces for artists and writers. The residency is open to professional practitioners in all art forms, and residencies can last for a maximum of one month. The residency aims to promote excellence and innovation in the arts.

Cultivate is pleased to announce La Baldi Residency for artists, writers, and researchers. The multi-disciplinary residency welcomes individuals and collaborative teams. Located in the historic village of Montegiovi, Italy, in southern Tuscany, the self-directed international residency is an opportunity to experiment, develop ideas and projects, dream, explore, rejuvenate, research, and investigate the land and culture of this special area.

The National Centre for Writing (NCW) Residency program offers residencies for writers and translators, in collaboration with various partners and funders. Residencies are hosted in the Cottage, part of the Dragon Hall campus, and typically last between one week and one month.

This residency program welcomes artists and writers working across all mediums and genres for two, three, and four week sessions. Residents enjoy well-lit, private studios within a short walk to residency housing, dining hall, and local amenities. Studio spaces range from 170 – 300 square feet. Accommodations include a private room and shared common areas. The campus features include a print shop, digital lab, and metal, wood, ceramic facility. Studios are open 24 hours a day.

Sarasvati Creative Space is a unique artist residency program located in Hohenwald, Tennessee. It offers a serene, nature-immersive environment for writers, artists, and creatives of all disciplines to focus on their work. The residency is set on 17 acres of beautiful, biodiverse land, providing a perfect backdrop for creative exploration and inspiration.

A.I.R. Studio Paducah, now in its 18th year as an artist residency program, is situated in the heart of the LowerTown Arts District, Paducah, Kentucky. Since 2004, creatives from around the country and abroad have passed through A.I.R. doors to make the most of the space and a stretch of undistracted time as envisioned by founder Alonzo Davis, himself an artist.

Julienne Dolphin Wilding founded the artist in residency program Event Horizon in March 2018. Event Horizon offers private creative space with off-site rented accommodation and on-site donation based glamping. The studio building is created from used shipping containers and is completely insulated, set in 20,000 Sq m (5 acres) of private land owned by Julienne and is close to the sea.

Taleamor Park offers scheduled solo or duo self-directed residencies with a minimum of two weeks during the months of April through October and six weeks or longer throughout the year.

The main objective of Gullkistan is to provide a home and workspace for creative people of all professions in an international community in the sublime surroundings of south Iceland where they can work on their ideas and become a part of Icelandic culture locally and in a wider spectrum as each one of them prefers.

This residancy offers beautiful, private bedroom/bathroom suites. Writers have access to many lovely and functional common areas including a large kitchen, dining / gathering room, writing porches, reading room, library, several outdoor spaces, decks, and gardens. They also have a swimming pool and a tennis court. The 65 acres surrounding the buildings provide ample outdoor space to explore and offer a respite after intense hours of writing.

Studio Faire is an artist-run contemporary art space in South West France, providing residencies for visual artists, makers, photographers, designers, musicians, writers, researchers and all other types of creative practitioner.

The 360 XOCHI QUETZAL Artist and Writer’s Residency Program is located in Ajijic, on Lake Chapala, the largest lake in Mexico, where the perfect year-round climate the views are breathtaking; the area has become a world-renowned destination where artists love to live, visit, and create. Residents will be inspired by the natural beauty, history and culture of this special part of central Mexico.

The Ou-telier, is an independent and process based residency; a place for you to decompress, experiment, research, and play.

In recognition of Merrill’s own contributions to Stonington, and his longstanding generosity, the fellowship provides living and working space and a $1,100 stipend to a writer to complete a project of literary or academic merit. Fellows are also hosted by local community members and organizations.
