Writing contests sit in a sweet spot between play and purpose. They give you a prompt or a theme to spark ideas, a word limit to keep things manageable, and a deadline that turns “someday” into “this week.” They’re low-pressure enough to experiment, yet structured enough to help you finish a piece and send it out into the world.

In 2026, there’s a wide mix of contests that offer exactly that balance. Some come with publication, prizes, or real visibility, while others are simply a smart way to stay motivated and try new directions in your writing. The list we have below gathers the 2026 writing contests worth your time, so you can choose what fits your goals and enjoy the process of writing, polishing, and finally hitting “submit.”
Eligibility & Restrictions
The contest is open to all writers in English except current or former students or employees of The University of Southern Mississippi. Fiction and non-fiction entries should be 1000-8000 words; poetry entries should be three to five poems, totaling ten pages or less.
