Entering a writing competition gives your creativity a clear target. Instead of writing aimlessly, you have a deadline to work toward, along with a genre, prompt, or word limit that challenges you to make careful choices. The goal is not only to finish a draft; many contests also offer prizes, publication, constructive feedback, or the chance to share your work with a wider audience.

To help you find your next challenge, we have more than 160 writing competitions scheduled for 2027 around the world. You can narrow down the list by genre, month, and entry fee, then compare deadlines, prizes, and eligibility requirements to find the contests that suit you best.
Eligibility & Restrictions
The contest accepts unpublished, human-written work primarily in English. Fiction and creative nonfiction must contain 600–8,000 words. Poetry entries require three to five poems totaling no more than 10 pages. Translations are ineligible. Current or former University of Southern Mississippi students and employees, and anyone affiliated with Mississippi Review staff, cannot enter. Submit anonymously. Multiple and simultaneous submissions are allowed, with separate fees and prompt withdrawal upon acceptance elsewhere.
